The battle over sensitive data protection continues. Approximately 100 million people in the US & 6 million in Canada have been affected by this data breach. A former Amazon software engineer has been arrested concerning this breach. Capital One stated that "no credit card account numbers or log-in credentials were compromised and over 99% of Social Security numbers were not compromised". Capital One also stated that 140,00 Social Security numbers and 80,000 linked bank accounts were compromised. Data breaches have become much more prevalent in the last five years. In 2018, Marriott had a data breach that exposed the information of about 500 million guests. In 2017, Equifax had a data breach that affected 147 million people. Equifax has now settled on that lawsuit and is paying those affected $125 each as a part of a $700 million settlement. Class action lawsuits are now being filed against Capital One. These data breaches leave questions for companies and us as consumers.

  1. Are companies being proactive enough to protect against breaches?
  2. Is our data valued enough? Does the $125 from Equifax justify the data that was compromised?
  3. What can companies and consumers do to protect from future breaches?
